Bio
Former Penn standout Sol Metzger was hired to modernize West Virginia’s grid program in 1914. He did so by establishing the “Penn system” which included a preseason training camp to get his players in condition for the season. Metzger also pursued some of the best players in the state and landing such standout players as Ira Errett Rodgers, Russ Bailey, Oscar “Paddle” Lambert, Clay Hite and Monk Hager. Metzger missed much of the 1914 season due to a broken leg suffered in an automobile accident, but he returned to lead WVU to a 5-2-1 record in 1915 before departing to coach rival Washington & Jefferson in 1916.
